We’ve all stumbled upon at least one of these clichés about tanning. But is there something true? Let’s find out together!
YOU CAN’T GET A TAN WITH SUNSCREEN
Wrong, you will get a tan even using a sunscreen with high SPF! Sunscreens are used to shield the skin from UV rays, but they do not prevent tanning, because no sunscreen can completely block the sun’s rays. With high SPF sunscreens you tan gradually, reducing the risk of sunburn and skin spots, as well as more serious damage. The tan will be more uniform and long-lasting!
DARK OR ALREADY TANNED SKINS DO NOT NEED SUNSCREEN
Skin should always be protected! Sun damage is not only the one visible immediately, such as sunburn and erythema. We need to protect ourselves both from UVB rays, responsible for sunburn, and from UVA, that can cause skin aging and serious skin diseases, such as melanomas.

TANNING BEDS PREPARE THE SKIN FOR THE SUN
Lamps, showers and tanning beds are used to avoid showing pale on the beach. Tanning in this way does not protect the skin, on the contrary! Sunlamps mainly emit UVA rays, which, reaching the deeper layers of the skin, cause more damage than UVB rays. Such close and intense exposure is harmful even when using high SPF sunscreens.

TO GET A TAN, YOU NEED TO GET BURNT FIRST
One of the most common false myths is that to get an intense tan you need to get burnt. Nothing could be more wrong: the redness of the skin indicates the presence of inflammation and, therefore, that the protection was insufficient!
THE SUN IS HARMFUL TO YOUR HEALTH
This is also inaccurate. If adequately protected, a moderate and careful exposure to the sun promotes the production of serotonin and stimulates the production of vitamin D, a precious ally against osteoporosis.
YOU DON’T GET BURNT UNDER THE UMBRELLA OR WITH A T-SHIRT
One of the most dangerous false myths! The fabric of the umbrellas is not able to totally filter the sun’s rays. As a result, the chance of getting burnt is high. The same goes for cloudy days: UV rays can filter through even when the sky is overcast!
And the t-shirt? Does it protect? Yes, but only partially: pay attention to the material! Cotton is a bad shield: it can block only 75% of UV rays. If the t-shirt is dry, there is a low protection factor, which drops further if it is wet. No excuses: sunscreen should always be applied!

It’s true… or almost! Staying under the sun initially gives you the impression that it dries the skin and eliminates blemishes, but the sebaceous glands, in an attempt to restore a correct hydration, further increase the production of sebum. The sun increases the thickening of the superficial layer of the skin causing the formation of comedones and blackheads.
